By Allie Marini and Brennan DeFrisco

Exquisite Duet

At once, spiritual, intimate and meditative, Allie Marini and Brennan DeFrisco's collaborative chapbook Exquisite Duet explores the deep recesses of emptiness, regret, desire, loss, loneliness, reconciliation and hope through two powerful poetic voices that walk together in the narrative. What emerges is a collection of poetic dialogues that wrestles with the wisdom of a mature experience. Poignant and profound in its urgency, Exquisite Duet is an unsparing assessment of the familiar and the strange in relationships, their formation and reformation, and their curiosities, passions and vulnerabilities as they climb the  difficult staircases that reveal and unbind.

from The Thing About Dragging Feet

there’s actually
nothing simple about death; it’s as complicated
an electrical process
& just as mysterious as galvanism.

nothing simple
about the soft impact of shovels
uncovering coffins &
graverobbing corpses
for something salvageable

nothing simple
about deciding what’s an acceptable loss,
who’s collateral damage during a plague
& deciding who’s expendable enough
to figure out how many feet of dirt you need
to dig a grave safe enough to save the village

nothing simple
about watching myself
day by day
returning back to dust,
knowing my feet
were only ever borrowed,
& eventually
the grave I’m robbing
                    won't be body enough
                                    to recreate life
